Security Alert – U. S. Embassy Bangui. Central African Republic

Location:  Bangui

Event: The government of the Central African Republic will conduct a constitutional reform referendum on July 30.  Campaigns for and against the initiative will run July 15 – July 28.  During these periods and in the aftermath, additional security personnel may deploy in all parts of the country, political activity could increase, and demonstrations may occur.  To ensure full situational awareness, U.S. Embassy Bangui advises U.S. citizens to closely review the standing guidance contained in the Travel Advisory for Central African Republic, and to exercise caution and avoid public gatherings.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid all non-essential travel, do not travel alone or late at night;
  • If you must travel on foot, do so in areas under the control of security forces, use extreme caution and keep a low profile;
  • Avoid large gatherings;
  • Review security plans, be vigilant, and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security;
  • Always carry proof or a copy of your legal presence in Central African Republic, such as a U.S. passport with visa, or a residency card.
